You’ve probably heard of the term “tongue-tied.” Did you know that this common phrase comes from an actual medical condition that can inhibit speech? The tongue is attached (or tied) to the base of the mouth by a thin tissue web called the lingual frenum. For some people, the frenum is unusually thick or tight, restricting tongue movement and, therefore, speech. It can also negatively affect nursing in infants.
A tongue-tie can lead to:
Feeding difficulties and dental development (especially in children).
Speech difficulties, especially for sounds that require tongue elevation, such as s, z, t, d, l, r.
Saliva management during speech and or eating.
Frenum scraping against the lower central incisors, and at times becoming pinched.
The inability to sweep the lips, which is common while eating an ice cream cone or in licking your lips.
In an attempt to compensate for the lack of tongue movement, some children demonstrate an increase in lateral or forward mandibular movement.
When someone is tongue-tied, Dr. Abedini may recommend to cut back the frenum a little bit. This is called a lingual frenectomy. It’s a common and simple procedure that can be done right here in our practice. Whether you’re an adult who wants to untie your tongue or a lingual frenectomy has been recommended for your child, Dr. Abedini would like to give you an idea of what to expect from this procedure. It may sound intimidating, but it’s actually very simple. The frenum doesn’t have nerves or muscle; it’s simply a connective tissue like an earlobe. The procedure usually takes under 10 minutes, and most patients feel fully recovered within the hour.
Dr. Abedini would like you to know a lingual frenectomy is nothing to be nervous about. If you think a lingual frenectomy may help you or a family member, let us know! Give us a call or email us with any questions regarding a lingual frenectomy.
The establishment is clean and well decorated and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I was given options to treat my gums and not force fed a sales pitch, which is a big deal to me. They did a great job while showing that they truly care about my oral health.
My family and I have been coming here for over 5 years. I was always afraid of the dentist as a kid, but now enjoy them taking care of my teeth. I am no longer fearful.
I came here with so many dental issues!!! The previous dentist I had made my problems even worse and I thought there was no end to the pain. I went to Dr. Kenny Abedini and he worked on my mouth for 9 months to get all the work I wanted done. Two deep cleanings, a root canal, ten gold crowns fitted just right (3 lower left 3 lower right 2 top right 2 top left all in the back) so I can still smile and you cannot see the gold. The best part no more pain!!! I have TMJ so I clench and grind my teeth until I cracked my other porcelain down. So this time I wanted gold so the metal will not crack or grind down as fast, and might last the rest of my life. Now the teeth in the back feel great, and look great. I would recommend him to everyone and will be a returning customer for years to come.
The front desk staff were friendly and efficient. My hygienist was friendly, knowledgeable, thorough, and gentle. My time with the doctor was short, because I didn’t have any major issues but he seemed nice. The whole appointment felt fast but not rushed. I also appreciated that they helped me navigate my insurance. I feel comfortable and confident returning, and I’d recommend to anyone!
